The South Dakota women opened Summit League play with 2 convincing wins over the Denver Pioneers.
The senior trio of Hannah Sjerven, Chloe Lamb and Liv Korngable paced the Yotes to a pair of win in Vermillion over the weekend. On Saturday, USD dominated from the opening tip and overwhelmed the Pioneers in a 87-47 rout. Sjerven did Sjerven things scoring 23 points, adding 10 rebounds while Lamb dropped 18 with Korngable adding 16. Macy Guebert got into double figures with 11 off the bench. The Coyotes defense was stout all game long in the blowout win.
Sunday brought a more competitive Denver squad, at least early on, but in the end the senior trio was again too much and the Yotes continued their Summit dominance and moved to 2-0 on the young conference season. Sjerven just missed another double-double going 25 and 9. Chloe Lamb scored 24 while grabbing 6 boards and Liv Korngable added 13 points and 4 rebounds. A strong 4th from Denver made the final score a bit closer than it may have been with the Yotes getting the 89-74 decision.
The news coming into the weekend was the injury of freshman Kyah Watson who is nursing a bad wheel. Coach Plitzuweit on the pregame radio show Saturday said the foot injury would keep Kyah out “for some time” Watson had played herself into the starting lineup prior to being hurt. In her place Harrisburg SD native Jeniah Ugofsky regained her spot in the starting lineup. The injury also means more meaningful minutes for freshman Morgan Hansen who has played well as well as freshman Natalie Mazurek and sophmore Allison Peplowski.
USD begins an extended road trip in league play, first up at Kansas City this coming weekend.
