Turnovers Hurt UND as Women drop one to UTEP

Posted on November 14, 2021 By Garrett Bruce No Comments on Turnovers Hurt UND as Women drop one to UTEP

UND battled shorthanded but fell against Weber.  After returning home for a few days, they then hit the road again to head down south to Texas, to take on UTEP.  While UND was able to get a couple more players back, they still were without 3 of their starters.  A rough first quarter doomed UND to an 89-69 setback to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Score By Quarter:

1st: UTEP 28. UND 10

2nd: UTEP 53, UND 30 (Score By Quarter: 25-20 UTEP)

3rd: UTEP 73, UND 45 (Score By Quarter: 20-15 UTEP)

4th: UTEP 89, UND 69 (Score By Quarter: 24-16 UND)

The Good

-2 point Shooting:  Take the 3 point shooting out of the equation and UND shot very well from 2, going 55% and an overall shooting percentage of 47.5%.  This is something that can work going forward (along with some improvement from 3.)

-Clair Orth:  One player who has done well for UND to start the season has been the Senior from Lino Lakes, MN.  She put up a 17 point, 6 rebound, and 4 steal performance to back up a solid first game against Weber.

-Jodi Anderson and Sammiyah Hoskin:  Two newcomers also stepped up.  Jodi Anderson had another solid performance off of the bench with 9 points.  Hoskin, the transfer from Detroit Mercy, had a great first game in an UND uniform (missed the Weber game), scoring 10 points on 5-6 shooting.

-Maggie Manson: After a rough night at Weber, it was good to see Manson bounce back with a 15 point performance, hitting 3-8 from 3 in the process.  UND is going to need more of that this season.

The Bad

-1st Quarter Turnovers:  UTEPs pressure really put UND behind the 8 ball, as they coughed it up 11 times in the quarter.  Teams usually try to have that many turnovers in a game.  This really hurt UND as UTEP scored 10 points off of those turnovers, which put them in a deep, deep hole that they just couldn’t climb out of.

-3 Point Shooting:  With 5:38 to go in the 3rd quarter, Deja Davis hit a 3 for UND.  At that point of the game, UND was 4-8 from 3, which is pretty good.  UND then proceeded to not make another 3 in the game and finished 4-16 from the field.  It also didn’t help that UTEP made 11-25 from 3 on the other end of the floor. This needs to be a number that improves going forward.  This should improve once they get some of their regulars back again.

-Missing players:  Another game without Olivia Lane, Kacie Borowicz, and Juliet Gordon.  3 players who would be in the starting lineup and would be making a difference.

After two tough road trips, UND gets to head back home for the first time and take on the Griz on Montana in a Thursday afternoon game (an afternoon game because of VB in the evening).
