For the South Dakota State women’s basketball team, there is not ’ a lot left to the unknown. Coming off a 2021-22 WNIT championship, the Jackrabbit women only have to replace one starter in Tylee Irwin. Paige Meyer is expected back around conference play, and the preseason #the 23rd ranked team comes into the season with a lot of firepower. Myah Sellan looks to put an exclamation point on one of the best careers in SDSU history during what could be one of the most promising seasons for the program.
There is a good mix of youth and veteran leadership on the team. With a strong emergence from Paige Meyer and Haleigh Timmer last season, there are four new freshmen they hope to get similar results from. They caught a glimpse of that from one freshman, Ellie Colbeck in their opening exhibition win of 105-58 over Southwest Minnesota State. While she did not play in this most recent game, Utah transfer Dru Gylten, gives the Jacks, another veteran guard to their squad.
They will need those veterans to step up early on this season with their official opening game against #21 Creighton. They also have a matchup with #1 team South Carolina and multiple other power five schools during their non conference schedule. There are major expectations going into the season, especially with all the turnover in the conference. There is a chance this could be one of the best seasons for the women’s squad.
With fan and player expectations as high as they are this season, it will be important that the Jacks don’t look too far ahead. As long as they take things game by game, they should set themselves up for a good run going into the NCAA tournament with hopefully a few wins there as well.
