Denver won their opening game Idaho (68-63). Tevin Smith led the Pioneers with 23 points, Tommy Bruner had 12, and Tyree Corbett had 13 rebounds. I had a chance to ask Coach Wulbrun about the game.
Tevin had such a good game, so I asked what made him so good. Coach said, “Tevin has a great combination of athleticism and the cerebral way he looks at the game”. Coach also praised Smith for creating opportunities for others, plus he is extremely coachable, and makes great decisions on the court. Wulbrun finished by saying, “while he is doing so many things on the offensive end, let’s not forget I think that he will be one of the best defenders in the Summit League this year”.
Coach Wulbrun praised the team for keeping their identity throughout the game, and they played unselfish basketball. Going forward he knows his team will shoot their free throws better. One other thing coach was happy about was the Pioneers 3 point shots came from inside out.
Another player Coach Wulbrun talked about was Tyree Corbett, he was asked what makes him such a great rebounder. “He pursues the ball with a tremendous passion”, Coach Wulbrun said that was the easy answer. Coach went on to say that high rebound numbers are the standard for Tyree.
We are starting a new tradition, Coach Wulbrun’s 3 stars of the game:
- Tevin Smith “for his 23 points and just great defense”
- Tommy Bruner “Tommy played 39 minutes for us and really did a great job of running the show for us and keeping the team together”
- Ben Bowen “He’s willing to do anything for us to help the team win”
