Reaching the Summit Power Rankings 1/8/24

Posted on January 8, 2024 By Todd Buckingham No Comments on Reaching the Summit Power Rankings 1/8/24

The Summit/Big Sky challenge gave us some great basketball and some shake-up in the power rankings.

  1. South Dakota State: 78 points (6) first-place votes

Last week: 1

The Jackrabbits dominate Montana State and lose a close one to Weber State. They stay in first place in the power rankings but can see St. Thomas in the rearview mirror.

2. St. Thomas: 75 (3)

Last week: 2

The Tommies continue their winning streak. There is certainly a argument to put the Tommies on top in the power rankings but as one voter said. They kept the Jackrabbits on top due to the strength of schedule. The Tommies Big Sky opponents were both +300 in KenPom.

3. Oral Roberts: 58

Last week: 3

The Golden Eagles remain in third but the distance to St. Thomas increases. Oral Roberts split in the Big Sky challenge and the loss was to Big Sky power Weber State. So voters keep them in third.

4. Denver: 54

Last week: 5

Denver splits in the Big Sky challenge but leapfrogs North Dakota State in part due to the Bison getting swept. Denver’s elite offense makes them an always dangerous team.

5. North Dakota State: 39

Last week 4

Despite 5 losses in a row, the Bison drop only goes so far. They drop one spot and head on the road this week in Summit League action. Big week for the Bison.

6. Omaha: 30

Last week: 9

With other teams struggling Omaha makes a big leap from 9th. This may have been more due to other teams’ struggles but Omaha almost secured a sweep in the Big Sky challenge but for a collapse against Idaho State.

7. South Dakota: 29

Last week: 6

The Coyotes are on a 3 game losing streak which drops them to the 7th spot this week. After an impressive road win against North Dakota State the Coyotes have not looked the same.

8. Kansas City: 28

Last week: 7

Kansas City drops a spot as Omaha rises. The Roos split in the Summit/Big Sky challenge

9. North Dakota: 24

Last week: 8

The losing streak continues for North Dakota and they drop to the bottom spot for the first time this season.
