The Summit League tournament kicks off today with South Dakota (12-18) taking on Oral Roberts (11-19) in Sioux Falls in the play-in game. The winner gets to play South Dakota State in the Quarterfinals.
It’s going to be a long road to the big dance for the Coyotes but anything is possible. Win four games & they are in. Granted, a 16-18 record likely gets you a play-in game but dancing is dancing.
How can the Coyotes win the tournament? Can they win?
- Get hot from deep. The Coyotes rank 20th in the entire country in percentage (37.5%) but they are only 231st in the country in attempts (20.8) Note: too often the Coyote shooters would get 2-2 & 3-3 from 3pt & we wouldn’t see another attempt from them. Hit teams early & sustain good looks throughout the game.
- Kaleb Stewart will need more volume if the Coyotes are to make a run. He was one of the best overall shooters in the Summit League this year with splits of (48% 2pt, 43% 3pt, 85% FT) & averaged over 15 points on 11 shots. I would expect him to get more looks.
- Lahat Thioune & rebounding. The Coyotes rebounded well on paper (49th in total rebounds in the country). However, Lahat is 3rd in Turnovers in the Summit League. If he can get going, watch out.
- Timid offense needs correction. Overpassing & lack of confidence in half-court sets has led to 13 turnovers (71st in the country) – Yotes need to take advantage of open looks. Bostyn Holt needs the ball in his hands more this weekend & make quick decisions.
- Physicality on defense & overall has lacked all year. Evident with the Coyotes only committing 16 fouls a game (271st) in the country. Long-term development will be mean more weight room sessions. This weekend I expect different defensive looks.
- Paul Bruns. He has not had has his best year (37.5% FG). Though, he has been growing more comfortable as of late. He will be an x-factor if he can get going.
The expectations are low for the Coyotes to win but they have pieces to win. They really do. A first round exit would not surprise me. However, don’t be shocked when the Coyotes go on a run.
