The Jackrabbit women’s basketball team got off to an interesting start this season. The Jacks went 1-1 but they probably feel like they should be 2-0. SDSU beating a young Green Bay team (70-49) handedly was a good sign, while losing to a Mississippi State team (71-76) that they could have beat felt like a disappointment.
The Jackrabbit fans learned they have two Freshman that they can count on. Paige Meyer scored six points against Green Bay and had 25 against a bigger Mississippi State team in her first road game of her college career. Haleigh Timmer also had two solid games to the season scoring 10 in game one and 11 in game two. Expect to see Haleigh and Paige at the top of the freshman of the year and on the freshman/newcomer team awards at the end of the season.
Many Jacks fans may have been surprised when Paige Meyer started over Lindsey Theuninck. Lindsey will play a big leadership role off the bench with the second unit. It will be interesting how this team comes together once Myah Selland is back in the starting rotation. Selland’s added scoring could make the Jackrabbits one of the deepest and most multiple teams in the Summit League Conference. We saw a consistent effort from Tylee Irwin and Paiton Burckhard. Tylee averaged 11 points and 4.5 boards, while Paiton averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds. The Jacks will need more scoring from them until Selland is back to full strength but it is good to see the two other seniors be consistent leaders in the first two games of the year.
The Jackrabbits have a big test on Monday in Ames, Iowa against Iowa State. The Cyclones will be a big measurement to see how this team can do against a top team in the country. Expect a good showing from SDSU on Monday but we won’t truly know how good this team is until we see them at full strength with Myah Selland!
