Omaha Women’s Basketball on a Five Game Winning Streak!!!

Posted on December 10, 2024December 10, 2024 By Michael Sharp

Who would have thought before the season began I would be talking about the UNO Women’s Basketball team on a five game winning streak during non conference play in December?  Whenever I pick Omaha Women’s Basketball to finish in the bottom of the league they tend to play better than expected and if I pick them in the middle of the pack Omaha ends up finishing last. Well here we are.  This five game win streak is the longest winning streak I remember since I have been following UNO Women’s Basketball which I started following this team during my freshman year of college back in November 2018.

The season started with Omaha going 1-4 losing to Nebrasketball, former Summit League foe Western Illinois, Kansas, and Wisconsin.  Their only win in this stretch was against NAIA College of St Mary’s located next to UNO’s Center and Scott Campus’s.  Things changed during the Wisconsin game in Madison which shifted momentum greatly only losing 67-65.  Omaha the next game would start the winning streak by beating Utah State at home in overtime 79-77 then would sweep the San Diego Classic by beating San Diego 70-66 and Utah Valley 53-48.  In the Summit League/Big Sky Challenge, Omaha started out slow in Portland at Portland State but turned things around in the second half beating the Vikings 65-67.  A few days later, Omaha defeated a tough Sacramento State team back in Omaha 67-63 which helped the Summit League win the Summit/Big Sky Challenge.

Some players to keep an eye on for Omaha is Senior Grace Cave, Sophomore Cora Olsen, Senior Morgann Gardner, Senior and Fresno State transfer Ja Harvey, Grad Student Katie Keitges, and Senior and Loyola Chicago/St Francis transfer Aaliyah Moore.  These players can average double figures during this hot streak.  Also watch out for Omaha defensively as Carrie Banks teams have been known to play very slow offensively limiting possessions for the opposing team and forcing defensive turnovers.  On Saturday, Omaha looks to keep the winning streak going to six games as the travel to St Louis to take on Lindenwood University at 1pm.
